Opening Nights Director retires after more than 50 years in performing arts programs

Michael Blachly, director of Opening Nights at Florida State University, will retire on March 17, 2022, after more than 50 years of spearheading performing arts programs throughout the country.

Blachly also served on the APAP board of directors from 2010-2019 and as its chair from 2015-2018.

During his four years leading the university’s professional performing arts program, Blachly expanded the number of performances offered each season and enhanced the educational programming provided to students at all levels.

“I am grateful to have served Florida State and strengthen the cultural offerings for the university, our students and the Tallahassee community,” Blachly said. “I will work to ensure a smooth transition that is compatible with the program’s mission to present compelling and distinguished artists who provide extraordinary experiences that educate, inspire and connect diverse audiences on and off campus.”

Blachly looks forward to presenting the current schedule of events in what will be his final season as director.

“The FSU family appreciates Michael’s leadership and contributions to the Opening Nights program,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “Opening Nights raises the profile of our university by bringing world-renowned artists to our campus. FSU is committed to this program, which is an asset to our faculty, staff, students and the community.”

Florida State will conduct a national search for Blachly’s replacement in the coming months.
